How Fit is Your Real Estate Practice?

You may have noticed that one of our contributors to the TREG Insider Blog is Lee Brinn. Lee is a personal trainer and dear friend of mine.

In real estate and personal fitness, I am a big believer in finding the right coach, so twice a week I work out with Lee. I always enjoy our lively conversations, as Lee is a bit of a philosopher and a pretty wise gentleman. Because of his insights, I often walk away with more than just a few sore muscles.

I recently asked Lee what separated his successful clients from those that struggled to make progress. His response was a bit unexpected. He didn’t say they need to do a better job of counting carbs and calories or spend more time in the gym. Instead he remarked that his clients that enjoyed the most success “were those that gave themselves over to the system.” Lee went on to say that in his world of personal fitness, “People need to have a legitimate plan, a system they believe in; and they need to buy into that system and implement.”

Think for a moment about the plethora of “silver bullet,” late-night diet and fitness commercials that promise results with little or no effort. Now think about the endless number of silver bullet career-building solutions offered to real estate practitioners. What’s true in the realm of personal fitness is true in the area of real estate career building: there are no silver bullets. Nonetheless, the real estate industry is replete with silver-bullet-solution sellers. The real tragedy is not just that these “soap sellers” are robbing agents of their time and money, but that they are stealing their hopes and dreams of a successful career by leading them down a dead-end road.

Success in any endeavor comes from hard work, commitment to a well-defined set of goals, and a plan to get there. As we inch closer to the New Year, it seems like a good time to take stock in where we are and what we want 2013 to look like. You may want to start by asking yourself a few questions:

  • Do I have a system that consistently generates new business?
  • Do I have written goals for the coming year?
  • What can I start doing now to improve my system and make 2013 my best year ever?
  • Do I have access to the right coaching to help me achieve my goals?

There’s an old saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” Perhaps it’s time to conduct a fitness evaluation of your real estate practice and choose your road. I’d be interested in hearing about the different ways people approach business planning and the difference it has made in the development of their real estate business.
