Questions, Conversations, and Online Success

It’s something we often discuss in our webinars, and it’s something that works effectively in turning Internet leads into clients.

It works on Facebook friends as well, and everywhere else on the social web. Oh yeah…it also works on people to whom you send email. Or people you call on the phone. Pretty much everywhere it’s applied, it works. What is it?

It’s the power of a question.

Go back through your latest Facebook posts. How many ended with a question mark? How many emails you send out end with one? How about your latest blog posts? Questions are the ultimate conversation starters…and written questions are permanent pregnant pauses that generate conversation with every reader, whether they choose to answer them immediately or not.

If we are like most people, our online percentage of asking questions is MUCH lower than offline. Research shows that most people go online to make statements and therefore will find a well-crafted question almost irresistible to answer…and this fact is incredibly useful when it comes to “internet leads.” Internet leads are not really viable until we strike up a conversation. (Of course, without a conversation, neither is any OTHER form of lead!) Questions are the spark that magically gets them talking. Questions show interest. Questions show the desire for them to share more.

I have watched this work over and over, time and again, and I would like to have you try it and tell me how it works. For the next 30 days, as many places as possible online (and offline for that matter), inject a question at the end of every possible communication. Seriously. Lots of questions into all your online communications.

For blog posts, end by asking people what their thoughts are. “What do you think?” On Facebook posts, even when wishing someone a simple, “Happy Birthday,” change it to “Happy Birthday! When’s a good time for us to chat and catch up?” and watch what happens. Inject it into holiday greetings. “Happy New Year! It’s been a long time since we talked; how is your family?” There are so many opportunities for this strategy to be effective.

The key to successful online marketing is to create opportunities and use them to strike up conversations. Questions are perfect for that, and it’s so simple that most of us overlook it…including me. So are you ready to give it a try? See how much of a difference it makes to inject as many questions as possible into your online world.

I’m interested to find out what your results are. How many more conversations will it generate? How many more potential clients? What do you think?
