Working with Friends: Tips and Cautions

There are various times in any professional’s experience when a friend or family member may ask for assistance or advice concerning an area of expertise.

The same holds all the more true for real estate agents. Working with friends can have its advantages as well as disadvantages.  There is a level of care to be brought to a business transaction involving someone with whom you are related or are friends.

When you find yourself working with friends and family, it’s important to note the possible risk involved. If you are currently or planning to work with a friend or family member,  keep business business and follow a few rules to make the entire process easier.

Treat them as you would any other client.

As in, it’s easy to be comfortable with the fact that you are familiar with your client friend, but that is no reason to become lax with your transaction. This person is still your client and you would still like to have a gleaming testimonial from them.  However, you will also need to convey the impression that this is your profession and acting as a professional will be the expected demeanor throughout the process.

Ensure your friend is aware that you will be handling the matter with professionalism.

Expect to go above and beyond.

Now, holding the previous advice as still valid,  this isn’t just any client. This is someone who you are very familiar with. They will, more than likely, expect treatment that extends beyond that of your usual clientele. Not only that, but you will no doubt be willing to give this additional care and attention given your relation.

Over-document–everything

Working with those you are very familiar with can be tricky when it comes to business. Verbal agreements and silent understandings may be appropriate outside of business, but dangerous when it comes to closing a deal with said person.  Keep everything in writing. Every small instruction and agreement should be documented and kept organized. If anything may be misinterpreted or unclear, you simply need to refer to your written documentation of the transaction. It could spare you a tremendous amount of frustration and a relationship with your client.

There are also some upsides to working with a friend—glowing reviews. The reason a friend or family member is working with you is because they trust you and are confident in your abilities. Confirming their beliefs can only reinforce your good reputation and will probably be helpful when it comes to referrals.

Also, perhaps a friend or family member may be a good person to lean on for insight.  Maybe, they would be able to give you an idea of what you could change or what is working from an insiders prospective that some clients would be reluctant to tell you about.

All-in-all, dealing with friends and family can be a very pleasant experience if approached in the right manner.
