Real Estate Trends to Watch

As it’s been stated before, the Internet has become the primary source from which buyers and sellers acquire information.

Promotion, searches, and recommendations – all are heavily reliant on the Internet.  90% of buyers are now using the Internet in their searches opposed to newspapers, magazines and open houses.

Now, these figures aren’t very surprising, especially considering the widespread use of the Internet. REALTORS® must consider the growing use of technology in when working in the real estate industry.

The trends relating to more frequent use of the Internet in home searches also lend themselves to greater use of technology devices and applications which better assist consumers.  Check out some of these real estate trends we found around the web.

Bring your own device

Now, IT departments are expected to support a multitude of devices that are brought into the workplace. The IPhone has changed the way REALTORS® perform their jobs. With easy access to useful apps, the industry has taken-on a new shape. However, there are also other mobile devices that have revolutionized the way real estate agents interact with their clients.

Wearable Technology

Sure, Google Glass has received some disparaging flack, but one thing is for sure: wearable technology is building momentum in 2014. Gadgets such as Galaxy Wear, Pebble and FitBit are being used more regularly and will continue to become more commonly used technology.

Internet of Things

As explained by whatis.com, The Internet of Things (or IoT as it’s sometimes referred to.) is “a scenario in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and the Internet.

A thing, in the Internet of Things, can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm animal with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the driver when tire pressure is low — or any other natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and provided with the ability to transfer data over a network. So far, the Internet of Things has been most closely associated with machine-to-machine (M2M) communication in manufacturing and power, oil and gas utilities. Products built with M2M communication capabilities are often referred to as being smart. (See: smart label, smart meter, smart grid sensor)”

Since it’s flooded into the consumer market IoT has caused some uproar. Though, it is not real estate specific, this concept has the potential to vastly benefit a wide range of industries.

Big Data

This term simply refers to information and data that can be accessed quickly and efficiently. The real estate industry can expect “big data” to have a significant impact on the way real estate professionals do business, especially since NAR has recently hired Todd Carpenter who is building a new perspective analytics department. In the words of Mr. Carpenter : “2014 will be focused largely on getting the most out of the data we already have, that means an increased level of collaboration between the association’s (NAR) departments. Then, looking for opportunities to personalize our communications, marketing and services to better serve each individual member.”

The tech movement isn’t new, but, as stated before, it is gaining momentum and it’s moving quickly. The sooner a professional acquires some tech know-how the better. The leverage you gain from immersing yourself in the industry tends will be immensely beneficial in our ever-changing technological world.
