REBOOT Your Referrals!

A recent article in REALTOR® Magazine highlighted some great tools that REALTORS® can use to cast a wider net and catch more business, specifically with referrals.

Unfortunately referrals don’t just magically appear in your inbox or voicemail and if you expect that to happen, you are missing a lot of opportunities. “ON average, real estate professionals earn 21% of their business through referrals from past clients and customers, and agents with stronger referral bases tend to have higher incomes”. These statistics taken from the 2013 National Association of REALTORS® Member profile highlight the reasons that agents must take a more active approach to their referral business.

Making yourself referral worthy is much easier if people believe you are a great agent. Earning designations and certifications gives past clients more confidence when referring you to others. Your education and demonstrated performance mean a lot and you can use your agent website, videos and blog posts to explain how the benefits of designations and certifications provide benefits to clients.

Targeting key players in your industry help you increase your knowledge and resources, and in turn referrals. Becoming social with and staying in contact with other REALTORS®, local service providers, community groups, and past and current customers “can be a gold mine for referrals”. Work with other industry professionals to exchange business leads, and join local organizations as a way to build an extensive network of contacts.

Developing and maintaining a dynamic and robust contact management system is important to ensure that nothing slips through the cracks and of course follow-up speaks for itself. If you find yourself in a position where you are not receiving referrals, ask yourself, how many you are sending out? You never know when someone in your sphere may need your expertise and/or advice which in many cases can develop into a business relationship. You will often times find yourself in unexpected networking situations and if you don’t feel comfortable outright telling people you want their business, asking to put them in your referral network, and vice versa is a great way to put yourself in a position for a possible future referral.
